Google measures how your site behaves for real visitors and boils it down to three simple readings you can check in a few minutes. Those readings are the Core Web Vitals - answers to the questions every visitor asks: can I see anything yet, does the page react when I tap, and does the content stay put under my finger. No magic, no mysterious algorithm - just three stopwatches.

This piece is a general guide for any WordPress site. If you run a WooCommerce store, there is a link near the end to a separate article - stores add a few traps of their own and I take those apart there.

Core Web Vitals in plain language

Three metrics, three simple questions:

  • LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) - how quickly the largest element on the page appears, usually the main image or the headline. That is the moment a visitor thinks “right, the page has loaded”. A good score: up to 2.5 seconds.
  • INP (Interaction to Next Paint) - how quickly the page responds to a click, a tap or typing. You click the menu and it opens - or you click and nothing happens for a moment. A good score: up to 200 milliseconds.
  • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) - whether content jumps around while loading. You know the feeling: you go to click a button and at the last second a banner drops in and you hit an ad. A good score: up to 0.1 (it is a unitless index - the closer to zero, the more stable).

Every metric has three zones: good, needs improvement and poor. The goal is simple - green on all three.

Where Google gets your scores from

Here is the crux many people skip: Core Web Vitals do not come from a lab, they come from real people’s browsers. Chrome collects anonymous measurements from actual visits to your site, and that is the data Google sees.

Which is why the result on your laptop settles nothing. You open the site on a fast computer, over fibre, with a warm cache. Your customer opens it on a phone that is a few years old, over mobile data, somewhere on the move. Google judges the second experience - rightly, because there are usually more visits like that.

How to check your site’s Core Web Vitals

Two free tools are enough:

  1. PageSpeed Insights - you enter the address and at the top of the report you get real user data, split between phone and desktop. How to walk through that report step by step I set out in the mini speed audit in PSI - the instructions were written for stores, but they work for any site.
  2. Google Search Console - the “Core Web Vitals” report shows which pages have a problem and with which metric. That is the best place to see the scale: is one page struggling, or the whole site.

What helps: do not confuse the lab score (the big number of points in the lower part of the PSI report) with Core Web Vitals. The points are a simulation under artificial conditions, and CWV are real visits. You do come across a site with a pretty point score and red user data - the second one is what counts.

How to improve Core Web Vitals on WordPress

Each metric is broken by something different, so the fix starts with checking which of the three is red.

Slow LCP is almost always the same trio: slow hosting, heavy images, no caching. The server thinks for a long time before it sends anything, and then the browser downloads an image the size of a poster. All three fixes I set out in the guide on how to speed up a WordPress site - that is the best first step.

Poor INP is usually an excess of scripts. Every plugin adds its piece of code, the page builder adds its own, the chat widget its own, the analytics its own - and the visitor’s phone has to chew through all of it before it reacts to a tap. The fix is slimming down: removing unused plugins and throwing out scripts that do not earn their place.

High CLS comes from elements that drop in without reserved space: consent banners, ads, embedded video, images with no dimensions saved. Add web fonts - text renders in one typeface, is swapped for another a moment later and everything jumps. The fix is reserving the space up front and setting the fonts so the swap does not shift the content.

This whole area - from measurement, through the fix, to keeping an eye on the scores over time - I handle as part of optimization.

Core Web Vitals and Google rankings

Yes, Core Web Vitals are one of the ranking signals - Google says so outright. And it says just as plainly that they are one of many signals, alongside content, links and how well the page matches the query. So I will not promise that green scores will fire your site up the results - nobody honest promises that.

I look at it differently: those three measurements describe whether using your site is tolerable at all. A site that is slow to appear, does not respond to touch and slides out from under a finger loses visitors regardless of its position. Improving it always pays off, then - the effect in Google is a bonus, not the goal.

Running a store? The bar sits higher

In a store every one of these problems costs genuinely more: a customer with a full cart will not wait for the page to stop jumping. Do Core Web Vitals affect Google rankings? Yes, but as one of many signals. Improving the scores alone does not guarantee a jump in position - what it does give you is a site people are happier to use.

Can Core Web Vitals be improved without changing hosting? Often yes - slimming down images, caching and tidying up the plugins can change a lot. But when the server responds slowly, LCP has a ceiling no plugin will break through.
