Your SEO partner does not have to be in your city - Google does not check where the person improving your site happens to sit. What counts is what is on the site, in your Google Business Profile and in the links pointing at you. Searches like “SEO Katowice”, “SEO Krakow” or “SEO audit Warsaw” - the kind of city-plus-service phrase people type on every market - describe where you want to be visible, not where the specialist is registered. All the actual work (the audit, the technical fixes, the content, the business profile) happens in site files and in dashboards you can reach from anywhere.
Below: when location genuinely makes a difference, what remote collaboration looks like from the inside, and what to judge instead of the address in the footer of a proposal.
What the location of your SEO partner actually changes
Almost nothing on the technical side, a little on the operational side. Broken down:
| Part of SEO work | Does the specialist’s location matter |
|---|---|
| Technical site audit | No - it is done over remote access to the site and server |
| Speed, structure and code fixes | No - work happens in the files and the dashboard |
| Content for pages and articles | No, as long as the person understands your industry |
| Google Business Profile | No - it is configured remotely, verification goes to your address |
| Photos of the company, the team, the work | Yes - somebody has to take them on site (a local photographer, not the SEO specialist) |
| Knowledge of the local market and competition | Partly - research covers most of it, but a local can be quicker |
| Meeting face to face | Yes, if you need it to trust the person and decide |
The practical takeaway: if you are searching for SEO Gdansk, SEO Lublin, SEO Rzeszow or SEO Opole, you are looking for somebody who understands the mechanics of local visibility - not somebody with your postcode.
Local SEO is not the same thing as a local specialist
Local SEO is the set of actions that make a company show up for people searching for a service in a specific city or area - in maps and in results tied to a place name. These two ideas get mixed up more often than anything else in this topic, and they are completely separate.
Local visibility is driven mainly by:
- Google Business Profile - complete, with a category, opening hours, service area and photos
- Consistent business data across the web - the same name, address and phone number everywhere you appear
- Reviews - how many, how recent, and whether you reply to them
- Pages for cities and services - genuinely written, not cloned with the city name swapped
- Technical health of the site - speed on a phone, correct headings, business data in the markup
None of these require the specialist to live next door. They do require somebody to actually do them and keep an eye on them.
When a local specialist does have an edge
In four situations - worth knowing them so you choose deliberately.
- You want to meet in person before deciding. Perfectly understandable with a bigger budget. Note: the kick-off meeting works fine over video, and after that you go back to email anyway.
- You need material shot on site - photos of the team, the workshop, the showroom, the finished work. That is a local photographer’s job, not an SEO specialist’s, and it is usually a one-off.
- Your industry is deeply rooted in one city - hospitality, services at the customer’s place, retail with in-store pickup. Somebody from the area will tell you faster how your customers really search.
- You would rather pay a company from your area on principle. That is a business argument, not a technical one - and it is fine, let us just call it what it is.
In every other case, the criterion “has an office in my city” cuts most of the good specialists off your list, rather than filtering out the weak ones.
What remote SEO work looks like, step by step
This is how it runs with me, whether the client is from Krakow, from Poznan, or from a village whose name I cannot pronounce:
- Free diagnosis - I look at the site, the business profile and the nearest competitors in the results, then list the biggest brakes on visibility.
- Access - site admin account, hosting panel, Google Business Profile, Search Console. You grant them yourself and can revoke them at any moment.
- Written audit - a list of things to fix in order of impact, split into “I will do this” and “you will do this” (reviews and photos, for example). What such an audit looks like point by point I described in the SEO audit checklist.
- Written quote for the scope before we start - you know what you get and for how much before anything moves.
- Implementation - technical fixes, page structure, content, business profile setup.
- Report and next step - what got done, what shows in the data, what we do next.
The only thing that genuinely replaces a meeting is a concrete written record: the audit, the quote and the report. If somebody does not give you those, office meetings will not save you either.
What to judge instead of the address
Six things that tell you more about a specialist than their city:
- Whether they start by looking at your site - or by pulling a ready-made package off the shelf. A proposal sent without a glance at the site is a proposal for anything.
- Whether they can explain in plain language what they will do. Not “on-site optimisation” but “I will rewrite your page titles, because right now three different service pages share the same one”.
- Whether you get anything in writing - audit, scope, schedule, report.
- Whether the accounts are yours. The site, the domain, the business profile and Search Console should belong to you, not to the person doing the work. This is one of the most common ways people get trapped.
- Whether they tell SEO and ads apart. Two different tools, measured differently - I broke that down in SEO vs Google Ads.
- Whether they say what they will not do. An honest specialist will admit that rankings also depend on the competition, the budget and the age of the domain.
An extended version of this list, together with the contract clauses worth insisting on, sits in the piece on how to buy SEO without getting burned.
Red flags in city-branded proposals
Offers targeting phrases like SEO audit Katowice, SEO audit Wroclaw or SEO audit Poznan tend to be the most mass-produced, because those are popular searches. A few warning signs:
- A guarantee of first place in Google. Nobody controls the algorithm and nobody controls what the competition does. An honest promise covers the work, not the position.
- A contract with no notice period, or a long fixed term. A sensible arrangement defends itself with results, not with a clause.
- A hundred auto-generated pages for a hundred cities. Thin, repetitive pages can hurt you more than having none at all.
- An office address that is a virtual office in every city at once. If being local is the argument, let it be real.
What it costs and how to settle it
Market rates for SEO are spread very wide and shift from year to year - which is why I will not give you one number here, because it would be made up. What I will give you is a way of counting that holds up.
| Model | When it fits | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| One-off audit plus implementation | The site has never been cleaned up | After implementation somebody has to watch the effects |
| Monthly retainer | Competitive industry, continuous content work | Monthly report - otherwise you pay blind |
| Mixed model | The most common sensible option | Split one-off from recurring work in the contract |
I compared both models with the cost side spelled out in the piece on one-off SEO versus a monthly retainer. On my side it works like this: bigger development projects are quoted up front, usually in the range of 5,000-10,000 PLN net for a closed scope (Polish market rates), and ongoing technical care of a site is 1,000, 2,000 or 3,500 PLN net per month depending on the package. The initial diagnosis is free.
When you just want it fixed
I start with a free diagnosis: I look at the site, the business profile and what is happening in the results for your area, then send a list of what is genuinely holding visibility back - in order of importance. It works exactly the same for a company in Katowice, in Rzeszow or in a small town outside Opole. If you decide to work together after the diagnosis, you get a written quote for the scope before we start - no work begins without your agreement on the amount. The technical part of the job (speed, structure, code fixes) sits in development and optimisation, and if you want somebody to keep it in shape day to day, that is ongoing support.
FAQ
Does SEO for a company in Katowice have to be done by a company from Katowice? No. Google judges the site, the business profile and the signals around the company, not the address of the person doing the work. A local specialist can be more convenient if you want in-person meetings or need material shot on site - but that is about comfort, not effectiveness.
Can SEO be run entirely remotely? Yes. All the work happens in the site files, the hosting panel and the Google tools you grant access to remotely. The audit, the fixes, the content, the business profile setup and the reporting are all remote. The only things that need somebody on site are photos of the company and a meeting, if you like meetings.
How long before I see results from SEO? The first technical changes show in the data after a few weeks, but real growth in visibility is usually a matter of months and depends on the competition in your industry, the age of the domain and how much content gets created. Anybody promising a specific position by a specific date is guessing.
Is it worth building separate pages for different cities? It is, if you genuinely serve those cities and each page has its own sensible content - a description of the service in that area, examples of work, travel details, contact. Cloning one text with the city name swapped does the opposite: the pages compete with each other and read like filler.
Sitting on this yourself and unsure where to start? I speed up and repair existing sites and stores - Core Web Vitals, outages, the features that are missing. Tell me what is happening and you will get a concrete quote with a date.
